With the Government demanding a greater need for after school activities and for children to be more active, why not give cheerleading a try...

Packages to suit ALL ages, abilities and budgets

BENEFITS OF CHEERLEADING

  • Provides fitness and exercise in a FUN way
  • It is a non traditional form of exercise which may appeal to and engage young people who are normally turned off by sport
  • Teaches essential life skills such as team work, discipline, communication and co-ordination.

2008 Big Lottery Fund Cheerleading Project

The project, funded by Big Lottery, started with over 40 teachers from 25 local primary, secondary and special schools attending a UKCA (United Kingdom Cheerleading Association) Level 2 coaching course in Buxton or Glossop in March 2008. Following this the teacher in each school then took part in a 6 week mentoring programme supported by Hannah Jones. By the end of the 6 week programme the teacher was coaching a full cheerleading session and choreographing their school teams routine. 17 out of the 25 schools have now completed the 6 week programme and the second phase of the project will run from September 2008 where the group is looking to involve other schools into the project. All schools involved in the project have received a set of 30 pairs of poms, made locally, so they can continue to develop the sport of cheerleading in their school.

Cheer Fest 2008 was a showcase for all the school teams. Each school has adopted a cheerleading team name and made a banner displaying their name that was entered into a competition judged by Sue Campbell.

One of the aims of the project was to create sustainable school club links to local cheerleading clubs. Spirit Shockers were receiving phone calls from parents immediately after the end of the festival, highlighting the impact a local festival can have on creating opportunities in sport. This will also lead to Loud and Proud developing clubs in the Chapel and Buxton areas by the end of 2008.
